I like to use white or
gold ink around the darker areas and black ink around
the lighter areas.
Experimenting with
collage paper is quick, fun way to establish the foundation of
painting. I get a thrill out of using the various textures and
colors, especially the marbled paper, to create unpaintable special
effects. Give it a try I think you'll like it. |
Creating
Cows
Yorkshire Cows (mixed media,22x30) is 90 percent collage
paper. The background papers have tiny leaves and petals. For the
cows, I used marbled and soft black papers that feathered when torn.
Then I painted in cobalt blue, alizarin crimson, yellow ochre and
Prussian blue to add hightlights and textures. I outlined shapes
with black, gold and silver links. |

1.First I sketched my scene on 300 lb. watercolor paper. I
painted a single piece of white rice paper with cobalt blue, indigo,
alizarin crimson and yellow ochre. After it dried, I applied the
rice paper to my watercolor paper with diluted white glue.
|

2. Next I applied various
painted papers like a jigsaw puzzle to fill in the landscape I'd
drawn. I created the greens by painting blue watercolor on yellow
paper. |

3. I added small pieces of
colored paper to the figures and created a dark value with black
paper. |

| 4. I used
textured paper to form rocks and the foliage. Then I painted and
splattered the clouds, details and textures with cobalt blue, yellow
ochre, alizarin crimson and white gouache |
|
5. I put the finishing
touches on Peter and Robin, Mirfield (mixed media, 11 x 8) by using
black ink around the splatter shapes, light values and textures,
except for those in the sky. |
