Dorothy Von Rhee

Dorothy Von Rhee began her serious study of fine art mid-way during her career in education and is largely self-taught. Von Rhee paints in oil, watercolor and acrylics, mixed media and collage. Her instructors have included Wolf Kahn, Charles Sovek, and Joe Hing Lowe in oil, Al Brouillette, Roberta Carter Clark, Mary Alice Braukman, and Ted Minchin in watercolor and acrylic, and Gerald Brommer, Pat Dews, and Donna Watson in collage.

Early on, the artist was involved mainly with portraiture and figurative work. Currently, she enjoys exploring and experimenting with water-based media, beginning with realistic images, and then pushing those images toward abstraction. The sun-drenched colors and textures in Florida are a continued inspiration.

Von Rhee has been included in juried shows in New York, New England and Florida and has been the recipient of many awards, including Winsor Newton awards and the Grumbacher Silver Medal. The artist has had several one-person shows, and has exhibited in galleries on Long Island, New York, the Chaffee Art Center, Rutland, Vermont, and the Southern Vermont Art Center, Manchester, Vermont. Her work is in private collections in New York, New England, Florida and many other locations.
