Featured Poet Betty Hebert

May 2002
Our 'Featured Poet' this month is Betty Hebert...let's see what she
said when
we interviewed her.
How long have you been writing poetry? ...............I have
written
poetry since I was around ten years old, but sporadically. The last
twenty
years or so have been on a regular basis.
How did you get interested in poetry?...............My maternal
grandmother was a fine poet and always encouraged me to try my hand at it.
What artists or poets do you most admire?..........Emily Dickinson,
Elizabeth Barrett Browning, E. Pauline Johnson (Canadian), Robert Frost,
Robert Service, many others.
What has inspired you to write?..............Nature has been a great
inspiration
for me.
Do you belong to any writers associations?...............Women in
the
Arts, Decatur, Illinois
How does your poetry evolve; sitting at a desk, just thoughts,
etc.?..........Just about anywhere. I carry a notepad and pen with me
everywhere I go. At home I have a desk I like to use.
Have you been published?..................Yes. Many small press
magazines,
books, Internet
What is your favorite work by another poet/poetess ?.............I
love Marge Tindal's
Native American poetry.
What is your own favorite work ?..............I really don't have a
favorite. There are a number I like, but most of my work I feel can be
improved on.
Do you have a website that showcases your work?....................yes.
http://www.artgally.com/blhebert
Did you have any formal training?...............No
Can you tell us a little about yourself; your family & where you
are from? .............Originally from Canada, my family came to the
States in 1945. My husband
and I have been married nearly 50 years.......in July. We have lived in
Northern Idaho
since he retired in 1980. We have a small acreage near the national
forest
and love the country and wildlife we see almost daily. We have four
children. One daughter and three boys. The youngest boy is disabled and
has always lived at home and will live with other family members someday
when we are no longer here. Both my husband and I are ham radio operators
although I am not nearly as active as he is. I'd rather write poetry!
How did you find Artgally?..............My friend, Marge Tindal
told me
about it and urged me to contact Sandy.
Please add anything else you feel would be interesting to our
readers?...............I've done many things I felt were interesting,
but
perhaps the most unusual was living in a ghost town in Nevada for 5 years.
We were fifty miles from the nearest town, by dirt road and our closest
neighbor was 25 miles away. We had none of the amenities and hauled all
our
water from a spring that was 15 miles away. We had a gold mine there and
used a dry washer to find gold. We restored a house that was built in
1907,
using old lumber and square nails we salvaged from buildings that had
collapsed. It was comfortable and we made it attractive. We had many
adventures there and found the high desert country beautiful and
fascinating. Thanks so much for the interview.
